Software-led platforms are rapidly displacing banks in merchant services, using payments to anchor broader SMB relationships and eroding bank market share from 58% to 43%. Despite the clear revenue and retention benefits, most banks remain stuck at 2–5% penetration due to slow onboarding, fragmented experiences, and outsourced technology that can't compete with the seamless, integrated propositions of digital-first rivals.
