Pollinate opens a development hub in South Africa

While opening a new office is an exciting milestone, what makes this particularly interesting is why we chose South Africa. Like many technology companies, we evaluated a range of locations for expanding our engineering capability. Eastern Europe offered deep technical talent. Vietnam offered scale and cost advantages. Latin America offered growing technology ecosystems and alignment with US time zones. Ultimately, we chose South Africa.
The decision wasn't driven by any single factor. It was the combination of several.
• First, the quality of engineering talent is exceptional. South Africa has a mature technology sector, strong universities, and a growing community of engineers who have worked on globally relevant products and platforms in regulated industries.
• Second, the ability to challenge ideas, debate trade-offs and collaborate effectively is often more valuable than pure coding capacity. We found South African engineers to be direct, thoughtful and highly collaborative - qualities that fit naturally with Pollinate's culture.
• Third, there is practical alignment. South Africa operates in a time zone that overlaps significantly with both the UK and Europe, making day-to-day collaboration far easier than many traditional offshore locations.
• Fourth, South Africa offers an attractive economic proposition. While cost was never the primary driver, it allows us to invest more aggressively in product development while maintaining a disciplined operating model.
Finally, we have been particularly impressed by the pace at which engineers in South Africa are embracing AI-assisted development. As software engineering evolves, productivity increasingly comes from how effectively teams combine technical expertise with modern AI tools. We have found a workforce that is enthusiastic about learning, experimenting and adopting new ways of working.
The supporting ecosystem in South Africa has also matured significantly. Employer-of-record providers, recruitment partners, legal frameworks and modern infrastructure have made it easier than ever for growing technology companies to establish a presence quickly and responsibly. Special thanks to OfferZen, Workshop17, MetaPress and YDangle for their continued support.
As Pollinate continues to grow, Cape Town will play an important role in helping us build products that support banks and SMEs around the world. We're proud to be investing in South Africa, and excited about what comes next.
